Campaigning has been at the heart of what we do here at Harrow Mencap since the very start, and we are always keen to work together with others to make life better for our community.

We were glad to join with the Harrow Association of Disabled People (HAD) to march for more Taxicard journeys for people with disabilities and mobility difficulties in Harrow.

On the 3rd of December, we marched all the way from the Red Brick Cafe in Wealdstone to Harrow Council’s offices at the Civic Centre, to handover a petition asking for Harrow residents to be given the same number of Taxicard journeys as people in other boroughs.

People from Barnet and Hillingdon get one return trip every week, but Harrow residents only get one every two and a half weeks. The lack of journeys makes life incredibly difficult for many people who struggle to get around as our video below about the Taxicard campaign will show you:

We are supporting the campaign to change this, so we got together with members of the HAD, Gareth Thomas the MP for Harrow West and Councillor Kareema Marikar the Mayor of Harrow on a wet Monday morning at the Red Brick Cafe in Wealdstone to get ready for the march. We set off at 11 o’clock carrying signs and umbrellas but we didn’t let the rain dampen our mood.

We waited at the offices until the council’s Chief Executive came to collect the petition in person. We were glad to see the Vice Chairman of the HAD Adam Gabsi hand over the petition and demand that Harrow Council provide better services for people with disabilities and mobility difficulties.

As always, we can’t wait to get to work with local groups and individuals in our community on more campaigns like this one and continue to improve people’s lives.
