This Learning Disability Week we proudly ran a programme of exciting events around the theme of sports inclusion.

We also prepared a video to showcase our brilliant sports leaders and the sporting activities that our clients have been taking part in:

Our events included a variety of inclusive sporting activities, a visit to Watford FC and our #SportsYouCan Conference in Parliament where we partnered with Paralympic gold medallist swimmer with a learning disability Jessica Jane Applegate MBE and other organisations.

Day 1

The first event of the week was our Sports Inclusion Day on Monday 17th June. Over 100 people joined us at North Harrow Methodist Church for the event.

The event featured inclusive workshops on various sports and activities including yoga, dance and athletics with Saracens Rugby Club who also gave a talk about their disability running club.

We also had a presentation from winter sport equality charity Disability Snowsport UK and a workshop from Level Playing Field on barriers that disabled people face at sport events and how to address them.

Day 2

On Tuesday we had our annual bus ride on a London Sovereign Bus to Vicarage Road Stadium.

Clients, volunteers, ambassadors, and staff enjoyed a tour around Watford FC’s stadium and a trip to their training grounds to take part in some sport activities, before returning to Harrow.

Day 3

Clients from our Children and Young People’s Services also had a brilliant time taking part in at Cedars Youth and Community Centre football and tennis event on Wednesday.

Day 4

Our final Learning Disability Week event #SportsYouCan took place on Thursday 20th June with around 100 people attended the event in one of Parliament’s committee rooms.

We arranged the event with different speakers including Jessica Jane Applegate MBE, and guests from Community Integrated Care, Level Playing Field, Sport England, Portsmouth FC, the Betfred Rugby Super League and International Mixed Ability Sports.

We organised the event to showcase and celebrate the best examples of people with learning disabilities in sport.

“It was an honour to be part of the first #SportsYouCan event. Sport must become accessible to everyone whether you want to take part yourself, coach, volunteer, spectate or socialise. It’s fantastic for physical & mental health and actually changes lives! We can do this #TOGETHER!”
Jessica Jane Applegate MBE, Paralympic Gold Medallist
“I am delighted that our very first #SportsYouCan Conference brought together so many like-minded organisations who are focusing on inclusion in sports for people with learning disabilities. The conference was a great example of the power of collaborations, and we are looking forward to continuing our discussions around sports inclusion and the necessary improvements needed for people with learning disabilities.”
