About Us Happy 70th Birthday On 12th November over 200 people came together at the Mapesbury Suite, Harrow Leisure Centre for our Annual General Meeting and special celebrations to mark Harrow Mencap's 70th year. A wonderful evening was enjoyed by friends and supporters in true celebration of what has been achieved over seven decades. Leader of the Council, Cllr Sachin Shah along with many others pledged their support to either achieve more opportunities, volunteer, fundraise or listen more to people with learning disabilities. Harrow Mencap’s Chief Executive Deven Pillay, said “I’m extremely proud and privileged working for this organisation given what it’s achieved for people with learning disabilities in Harrow” “70 years on we are still working hard to persuade the public, business and public services to go beyond the label of disability and to give people with learning disabilities an equal chance”. Marie –Louise Nolan, Chair of the Board of Trustees said “Whilst we celebrate our achievements over the last 70 years we must not be complacent. So much still needs to be done. It is an indictment on our society that in the second decade of the 21st century, people with learning disabilities still do not have proper access and opportunities to continuing education, employment, public transport, health services and to feeling safe” Throughout 2017, to mark their 70th year Harrow Mencap will be holding community events across the borough to re-connect supporters and Harrow residents with the original vision that saw people coming together to do things to empower people with learning disabilities.
