News & Events News Andrew's Story We here at Harrow Mencap are so grateful to the volunteers who give their time and energy to support us. We sat down with Andrew O'Brien who volunteers on our Connecting Communities programme to find out about his experience with us. Andrew told us that engaging with Harrow Mencap has made a huge difference to his life. 1. What was life like before Connecting Communities? Life was boring, very, very boring. I had nothing to do, I was on the dole and just bored. I didn’t have a camera, I was just moping about doing nothing. 2. How have things changed since you started volunteering with our team? Connecting Communities opened my eyes up, I’ve been over the moon. I’m always smiling, I’ve always got something to do, if I’m not doing collections, I’m taking photos at the events and if I’m not doing that, I’m doing something else in the community. 3. What is your favourite thing about Connecting Communities? Helping other people who are worse off than myself and taking the photos which I love doing. 4. What are you hoping for Connecting Communities in the future? If possible I’d like to take Connecting Communities elsewhere like Brent. 5. What’s the atmosphere like at a Connecting Communities Event? Jovial. The events are lively. There’s no animosity, we all get on together. We welcome people with open arms. 6. What’s your favourite event so far? I really enjoyed rehearsing at Pinner Green for our Easter show.
