Our Connecting Communities Manager Jeremy Child has prepared a special message for all our volunteers:

Dear Friends,

With a different Christmas now with us, and the end of probably the most gruesome year in our lifetimes certainly since the Second World War, I send this message to all of you.

Whether you have soldiered on collecting at our supermarkets, helped run our Connecting Communities indoor and outdoor activities, re-jigged to accommodate the difficult conditions, prepared those delicious lunches, prepared evening meals at Pinner Green, given time for individuals that need it, helped run our new Telephone Connecting Communities and Microsoft Teams sessions or helped in so many other ways.

There are some positives to reflect on from this year.

People have enjoyed activities in small groups, the healthy walks, the revised small activities in churches and the high quality food.  Running a section of Connecting Communities events over the telephone and Microsoft Teams means those not able to venture out from their care homes have still been able to participate as part of our family. Thanks too to others that were not so easily able to go out but helped massively with additional administration for us. Similarly thanks to Staff Members Ed, Denzil and Jordan who have made communications modernisations the best ever, with updated websites and for setting up the Harrow Mencap Memories page. Many thanks to Jodie too, who has so helped me modernise my ways of working.

For the New Year we plan to expand our walking activities with an even greater selection of locations, including trips to more country spots, visits and day trips. As pandemic restrictions ease as more of us are eventually vaccinated, we will gradually be able to open our community walks up for new people.

It's been an honour to return to St John's Church, Harrow this Autumn and start Friday Sessions at Northwood Methodist Church with Skill Up.

During 2021 it would be good to be back at many other of our religious organisations and to once again offer activities to different Community Groups in the Boroughs of Harrow, Hillingdon, Brent and Barnet.

I am feeling very positive for Harrow Mencap/ Connecting Communities.

I cannot thank enough each and every individual who have made 2020 a success for us all in difficult circumstances.

A very Happy Christmas and New Year to all of you

Jeremy Child
