Learning Disability Week

Harrow Mencap celebrated Learning Disability Week 2017 with a series of events and activities to help people think differently about learning disability. Our theme for the week was "Here I Am".  It's about showing individuals as more than just a disability, showing them as a whole person as who they are.

The week long activities included a fashion show at St Anns Shopping Centre, Pop Up Stalls in Harrow Town Centre and a bus tour across Harrow courtesy of Sovereign Buses.

The fashion show saw young people with learning disabilities on the catwalk modelling their favourite outfits and showing there are no limits to what people with learning disabilities can achieve.  The models were given the full star catwalk treatment, including having their hair done by MG Hairdressing in Stanmore.

The bus tour with Sovereign Buses started at Harrow on the Hill station and included stops in Pinner Green and went as far as Edgware.  On board the bus were people with learning disabilities who wanted to raise awareness and visibility of people using public transport and getting out in the community.

Sarah Scott, Harrow Mencap Campaigns Manager said "For learning disability week we wanted our activities and events to challenge public perceptions and show that there are no limits to what people with learning disabilities can achieve.  The activities that the young people took part in allowed them to say "Here I Am" and show that although they have a disability, they can still do all sorts of things"
