From Skill Up to paid work - Katie's Story

Since I finished college in 2013, I have taken every opportunity to learn new skills and to develop my independence, with one of the main aims being to find employment.

I first came across Harrow Mencap while attending the "Inspire Me" course there and this led me on to becoming a Young Ambassador for Mencap.  I have been involved with many Mencap programmes and campaigns - the Include Me Group, Hear My Voice Campaign, Campaigns Champions, Steering Groups and of course Skill Up.

In a nutshell Skill Up has given me:

  • Independence - I now travel confidently
  • A chance to try new activities and develop new skills in a safe and supportive environment.
  • I have made new friends
  • I have learnt how to manage money

I have fun and feel part of a group, it has given some structure to my week and that makes me happy.  There are not many services out there for my age group and my disability.  It gives us all the chance to voice our opinions in an environment where it is valued.  That is really empowering.

It also gave me the chance to apply for an Office Assistant role at Harrow Mencap - a paid job!.  I am very happy to report that I have been working there since February 2017.

Harrow Mencap is perfect for me, it is inclusive, challenging and positive.  I feel my own attitude reflects these values.
